The Guide To Murder

Michelle Piggott

Welcome back to Bess’ Book Corner!

We are taking a different turn this week. I thought a good murder mystery would spice things up a bit. This week we will review A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder (book 1 out of 3) by Holly Jackson.

Andie Bell, the pretty “it” girl was killed by her boyfriend, Sal Singh who then killed himself. A tragedy in a small town called Fairview.

Five years later, this tragedy still haunts the small town. Pip focuses her senior project on re-examining the Andie Bell case. The more she digs and uncovers Fairview's secrets, the more someone does not want them revealed.

Let’s start by saying I engrossed myself in this book. I love to watch murder mysteries, but I never thought I would love reading them more. The details are more vivid in a book than in a movie. The way the book flowed kept me on my toes. I wanted to know and keep mental notes of what clues were revealed and what Pip would do with the clues. I have to say, pay attention to everything. The first book foreshadows a lot of what is revealed in the following 2 books.

The main character is Pip. She is a senior in high school and for her senior project, she decided to re-examine the Andie Bell Murder. She gets Ravi Singh, Sal’s older brother, to help her. Honestly, Ravi is my favorite character. He just wants to live his life, but how can he when everyone in Fairview hates his family? I favor him because he sees Pip as a chance for hope and closure. I like his humor and he compliments Pip.

There was not anything that I disliked about the book. I did not find any obvious plot holes. Holly Jackson did a fine job of getting to those who did it. I did have lots of questions at the end of the book. There were things in this book that did not make sense and I asked what the motive was for that action. How did it connect to that person? With that being said, my questions were answered in the next books. They were minor questions, I was not upset that they weren’t answered and did not leave holes in the plot. I was surprised when they were then answered later. So be patient!

An Adaptation was released on Netflix at the beginning of August. I liked it, however not as good as the book. The book paints a much better picture and vivid details better than the show. However, if I had not read the book the show would be the best in the world (besides FRIENDS).

Rating: 4 out of 5
